Commissioner of the Revenue
Commissioner of the Revenue Helen Royal was elected in 2011 and her term began Jan. 1, 2012. She is a lifelong resident of Montgomery County and has worked in the office for 20 years. The Commissioner is elected locally every four years and is the chief assessing office of the County. The Commissioner and staff are responsible for accurately assessing all tangible personal property (personal and business) and maintaining real estate ownership records. The Commissioner oversees tax relief programs for seniors and permanently disabled citizens, land use and the car tax rebate. In addition, the Commissioner oversees the filing of Virginia State income tax returns for the County.

Mission
  • introduce web-based technology that allows residents to interact with the Commissioner's office
  • cross-train all employees for better customer service
  • deliver excellent customer service to the citizens of Montgomery County
  • assess all property in Montgomery County - both real and personal equitably
  • encourage input from taxpayers
