Officers of Election
The Montgomery County Electoral Board is responsible for recruiting, placing and training Officers of Election for the 24 voting precincts in Montgomery County. Officers of Election are citizens who provide integral service to the County's voters on Election Day; we are honored to work with them and we commend their dedication. We welcome anyone interested in joining our team; help serve your community and earn a little extra money as an Officer of Election! Please read below for more information.

Can I become an Officer of Election?

To be an Officer of Election in Montgomery County, you must be a citizen of the United States and registered to vote in Virginia.

In our state, the polls open at 6 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. As an Officer of Election, you must be at the polls from 5 a.m. until the polls close, and until the Statement of Results and all closing tasks assigned by the Chief Officer have been completed.

A general training session for most elections is mandatory. In addition, training on use of the voting equipment and the new laptop-based electronic pollbooks may be required. We schedule the training at various times and locations around the county and you may attend any session that fits your schedule and location. The training schedule is announced six to eight weeks prior to elections.

Election Officers are paid $125 for the hours worked on Election Day ($150 for the Chief Officer), plus $25 for each training session attended.

Time off from work

Many employers view working as an Election Officer as a community service and may give you a day of leave to perform your duties. If your company provides this benefit, we will provide a signed statement verifying your work on Election Day.

As stated in Section 24.2-118.1 of the Code of Virginia, "Any person who serves as an officer of election ... shall neither be discharged from employment, nor have any adverse personnel action taken against him, nor shall he be required to use sick leave or vacation time, as a result of his absence from employment due to such service, provided he gave reasonable notice to his employer of such service. Any employer violating the provisions of this section shall be guilty of a Class 3 misdemeanor."

Some employers have a community interaction program and will pay employees for their volunteer work. Ask your employer if they offer this.
