The future

Montgomery County is a technologically advanced community with two major universities and a relatively young, mobile workforce, so the County is making every effort to meet these technology demands by becoming one of the most digital counties in the country. The new responsive design of the County web site is a prime example of responding to the needs of citizens, and is only the first step in the goal for each citizen to personalize their own County site to easily see the information and perform the services desired.

The County has specialized sites for business users in the Economic Development web site and is currently developing a Tourism web site. Building contractors and real estate developers now have easy access to current permits and inspections data, and the iGIS web site provides advanced mapping capabilities using the international Geobase standard. Citizens Self-Service allows users such as mortgage banks to easily access citizen tax information and for individuals to easily record information, such as the sale of personal property.

The County is also striving to consolidate technology resources with regional efforts, such as the 911 Authority, and projects such as the ERP consolidation between the Government and Public Schools. IT has undertaken several major projects to consolidate data storage and server infrastructure and upgraded the telecommunications and network infrastructure to provide a 24x7 high availability technology environment. The ultimate goal is to provide a consolidated data center for the County that all governmental entities could use to provide more advanced technology to each organization without additional cost to the citizen.

The County desires to be as responsive as possible to the citizen and work with the community to advance technology. IT is a founding municipal partner with a Code for America brigade, sponsoring civic hackathons to provide citizens with better access to governmental open data. The County is providing free public wireless internet access at all major facilities, including the Frog Pond public pool and animal shelter, and makes Board of Supervisors' meetings available via video through the web site. Law enforcement officers and County employees are equipped with technologically advanced equipment in their vehicles and smartphones and tablets are provided to the mobile workforce.

The County is striving to provide the best, and most efficient, technology service possible to our employees and citizens with the desire to become a premier digital county in the United States. The National Association of Counties recognized Montgomery County in 2015 as the third most digital county nationally for populations under 150,000. The following document is the County's current Five-Year Technology Roadmap outlining IT's strategic direction.
