Blacksburg, Virginia, Feb. 27, 2015 – Montgomery County Emergency Services in cooperation with the Blacksburg Fire Department has been awarded a grant to construct a burn building at the Blacksburg Fire Department Training Center on Merrimac Road. Grant funding for the building was provided by the Virginia Department of Fire Programs. The project is expected to cost approximately $480,000 and be completed by the end of the year.
The proposed two story building will feature two live burn rooms, allowing firefighters from Montgomery County, the Radford Arsenal, and Giles County to train under live fire conditions in a controlled environment. Firefighters can also learn forcible entry skills, fire attack, hose advancement, ventilation, search and rescue, laddering and overhaul.
Currently local fire departments travel to Pulaski, Galax, or Roanoke County to participate in this type of training. Having a facility in Montgomery County will reduce the amount of travel and will allow for more frequent training.
