Adjustment and Appeals Board (Building Code)
Meets on an as-needed basis to hear appeals regarding decisions made by the Building Inspector, and any appeals regarding the Electrical Code. Term of office is four years. Term limit of two consecutive 4-year terms.

Agency on Aging (New River Valley)
Serves as the governing body for an agency offering a spectrum of services which allow older persons to maintain maximum independence. Members make policy and fiscal management decisions. Meetings are held on a quarterly basis at the Agency on Aging Building in Pulaski. Term of office is one year.

Agricultural and Forestal District (AFD) Advisory Committee
Meets on an as-needed basis to review landowner applications for the creation of new AFDs, as well as additions and renewals of existing AFDs. During the review, the AFD Advisory Committee determines that the landowner has a conservation plan or forestry management plan to guide stewardship of the land management practices and measures are being carried out. Four members must be engaged in agricultural or forestal production; all other members must be landowners within the County. Term of office is unlimited.

Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA)
Meets on an ongoing basis to hear variance requests and appeals regarding decisions made by the Zoning Administrator. The Board of Supervisors recommends appointments to the Circuit Court judge. Each member is appointed for five years. BZA. There are no term limits. BZA members are required to take the Oath of Office. View agendas and minutes.

    Children's Services Act Community Policy and Management Team (CPMT)
    Creates a collaborative system of services and funding that is child centered, family focused and community based. Determines the scope and length of mandated treatment for youth with a variety of physical, mental and emotional disabilities and illnesses. The Board of Supervisors appoints one parent representative and one private provider. Term of office is two years. Term limit of two consecutive 2-year terms. Meetings are held the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 2:30 p.m. at the Health & Human Services Building in Christiansburg.

    Fire and Rescue Commission
    Serves in an advisory capacity to the Board of Supervisors to review capital equipment needs for fire and rescue operations. The commission also works with the Director of the Montgomery County Fire and EMS Department to make recommendations in developing a comprehensive strategic plan for fire and rescue services, and any other matters concerning fire and rescue services. Members are appointed by the Board of Supervisors and made up of:

    • 1 member from each County volunteer fire department
    • 1 member from each County volunteer rescue squads
    • 1 staff member from each jurisdiction (Blacksburg, Christiansburg and Montgomery County) knowledgeable of their locality’s capital budget
    • 1 member of the Board of Supervisors
    • Montgomery County Fire and EMS Department Director 

    Appointments are for three years. There are no term limits. Meetings are held on the 3rd Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at the Government Center, 755 Roanoke St., Christiansburg.

    Juvenile Detention Commission
    Serves as the governing body of a home which provides services for youth detained by the courts. Establishes general operating procedures and acts as budgetary advisors. Term of office is four years. Term limit of two consecutive 4-year terms. Meetings are held on the 3rd Wednesday each month at 6 p.m. at the Juvenile Detention Center on Wade’s Lane in Christiansburg.

    Montgomery County Economic Development Authority (EDA)
    The EDA works with the Department of Economic Development to carry out the Board of Supervisors’ vision and policies for economic development. This includes business retention and expansion, business attraction and marketing, entrepreneurial development, workforce development, commercial real estate development and reuse, and communications and outreach. Terms are four years with a two-term limit. Members are required to take the Oath of Office. Meetings are the third Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. at the Government Center. View agendas and minutes.

    Montgomery-Floyd Regional Library Board
    Administers and establishes policies for the Montgomery-Floyd Regional Library system. Term of office is four years. Term limit of two consecutive 4-year terms. Meetings are held the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Christiansburg Library. View agendas and minutes.

    Montgomery Regional Economic Development Commission
    Acts in an advisory capacity for encouraging existing business and industry to expand and to solicit new business and industry for the County. The goals of the Commission are to increase jobs and payrolls, decrease taxes and increase the standard of living for residents. Term of office is three years. There are no term limits. Meetings are held the 3rd Thursday of each month at 11:45 a.m. at Virginia Tech’s Corporate Research Center, Building #12. View agendas and minutes.

    Montgomery Tourism Development Council
    This advisory council provides guidance to the Montgomery Tourism Operating Board and tourism staff in the development and implementation of the regional tourism program. Appointments are for two years. There are no term limits. The Board of Supervisors and two Town Councils appoint through recommendations. The Council is made up of nine voting members and one non-voting member as follows:

    • 1 member of the Board of Supervisors
    • 1 member of the Blacksburg Town Council
    • 1 member of the Christiansburg Town Council
    • 1 member of the Chamber of Commerce
    • 1 member from Virginia Tech (non-voting member)
    • 5 members who are owners, operators or employees from local hotels, restaurants and attractions

    Meetings are held the 4th Thursday of each month at 10 a.m. at the Government Center and various locations. View agendas and minutes.

    New River Community College Board
    Serves as the policymaking body for the New River Community College. Term of office is four years. Term limit of two consecutive 4-year terms. This Board meets quarterly in March, June, September and December. Location of meeting is voted on at each previous meeting.

    New River Valley Community Services Board
    Sets local policies and administers mental health, mental retardation and substance abuse programs in the area. Reviews finances of mental health/mental retardation agencies. Term of office is three years. Term limit of three consecutive 3-year terms. Applications are available for public review. The Board meets the 4th Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. at 700 University City Boulevard in Blacksburg.

    New River Valley Development Corporation
    Serves as a Certified Development Corporation pursuant to Section 503 of Title V of the Small Business Investment Act of 1958, as amended, and is governed by all requirements of Section 503. Term of office is unlimited. The corporation is made up of representatives of the member jurisdictions in the New River Valley Planning District. Meetings are held the 2nd Wednesday in November each year at 7 p.m.

    New River Valley Regional Commission
    Administers a comprehensive region wide plan for growth and development. Members establish policy and delegate duties to staff members through an executive director. Term of office is three years. Term limit of two consecutive 3-year terms. Meetings are held the 4th Thursday of each month at 7:30 p.m. at the commission office in Radford.

    Parks and Recreation Commission
    Serves as an advisory board to the Parks and Recreation Department in developing leisure activities and programs for residents of all ages. Term of office is three years. Term limit of two consecutive 3-year terms. Appointments are made by election districts, plus 2 at-large appointments. Meetings are held the 2nd Thursday of each month at 6 p.m. at the Government Center. View agendas and minutes.

    Pepper’s Ferry Regional Wastewater Treatment Authority
    Acquires, finances, constructs, operates and maintains wastewater equalization, pumping treatment and disposal system. Membership is made up of eight members residing in and appointed by the governing body of each of the member political subdivisions: 2 members selected by the Radford City Council; 1 by the Dublin Town Council; 2 by Pulaski Town Council; 1 by the Montgomery County Board of Supervisors; and 2 by the Pulaski County Board of Supervisors. The governing body of each member political subdivision may appoint an alternate for each member it appoints. Term of office is four years. Term limit of two consecutive 4-year terms. Meetings are held the 1st Thursday of each month at 11:30 a.m.

    Planning Commission
    Advises the Board of Supervisors on planning issues such as zoning requests and guides long-range planning and growth. Term of office is four years. Term limit of two consecutive 4-year terms. Meetings are held the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Government Center. Public hearings are held the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Government Center.     Social Services Board
    Works cooperatively with the State Board providing financial assistance programs to individuals and otherwise assists and protects individuals who are unable to care for themselves. Term of office is four years. Term limit of two consecutive 4-year terms. Meetings are held the 3rd Thursday of each month at 9 a.m. at the Health & Human Services Building in Christiansburg.

    Transportation Safety Commission
    Gathers local input in recognizing and solving problems in the area of highway safety. Members represent local town governments, county government, the school system, etc. Term of office is three years. Term limit of two consecutive 3-year terms for citizen appointments. Meetings are held on a quarterly basis, usually the 1st Tuesday of each quarter at noon.

    Virginia Tech/Montgomery Regional Airport Authority
    Markets and obtains grants, loans and other funding for regional airport improvements and other activities and promotes and assists in regional economic development based on the mission of serving corporate executive markets and general aviation. The Town of Blacksburg, Town of Christiansburg, Montgomery County and Virginia Tech appoint one member each and all member jurisdictions jointly appoint the fifth member. Each member is appointed for a term of four years. No term limits. Meets the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 3 p.m. at the regional airport.
