Committees with Montgomery County Representation

Airport Commission (New River Valley)
Responsible for the maintenance, operation and development of the New River Valley Airport, which supports existing and future employers in the region. The commission is comprised of the Counties of Montgomery, Giles and Pulaski; the Towns of Christiansburg, Pulaski and Dublin; and the City of Radford.

Community Action, Inc. (New River Valley)
Promotes the development of the social, economic, educational and spiritual life of the City of Radford and the Counties of Floyd, Giles, Montgomery and Pulaski; and mobilizes resources to combat poverty through community action programs. Members live in the locality they represent.

Community Corrections and Pretrial Services (New River)
Advises in the development and operation of programs and services for use by the Courts in diverting adult offenders from the Regional Jail and other local correctional facilities; assists community agencies and organizations in establishing and modifying programs and services for adult offenders; and evaluates and monitors community programs and services to determine their impact on adult offenders. The members include the Counties of Bland, Carroll, Giles, Floyd, Grayson, Montgomery, Pulaski and Wythe; and the Cities of Galax and Radford.

Damage Assessment Team
Assesses damage to public and private property to determine the need for an emergency declaration and/or disaster assistance.

Disability Services Board
Assesses service needs for persons with physical and sensory disabilities and advises the appropriate state and local agencies serving the City of Radford and the Counties of Floyd, Giles, Montgomery and Pulaski.

Economic Development Alliance (New River Valley)
Fosters coordination and cooperation among the localities, development agencies and organizations to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of economic development activities and promote a strengthened economy. Provides mutual assistance and idea exchange to stimulate development through a diverse marketing program. The Alliance is made up of local political jurisdictions, and public/private organizations.

Emergency Services
Prepares for and coordinates responses to natural, manmade and other disasters to prevent and minimize injury and damage.

Fairview District Home Board
Oversees operations of the Fairview District Home for adults.

Joint County/School Liaison Committee
Meets to discuss issues of mutual interest.

LEPC (County of Montgomery/Town of Blacksburg Local Emergency Planning Committee)
Serves as the focal point for emergency response planning for emergencies involving hazardous substances, and for managing information concerning hazardous chemicals.

MBC Development Corporation
Makes loans to existing and new small businesses in Montgomery County. The MBC Development Corporation is certified by the State Corporation Commission as a not-for-profit community development corporation.

Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) (Blacksburg/Christiansburg/Montgomery Area)
Provides information, tools and public input necessary to improve the region’s transportation system and address future needs. An MPO was established as required by federal law because the Towns of Blacksburg and Christiansburg, and a portion of Montgomery County are designated as an urbanized area of more than 50,000 in population. Montgomery County Improvement Council (MCIC)
Promotes awareness, education and involvement by citizens in litter control/prevention and recycling. Membership is open to anyone interested in improving the environment of Montgomery County. Board representative is appointed annually.

New River-Highlands Resource Conservation and Development District
Promotes management of natural resources to enhance the quality of life and environment of 11 counties in southwest Virginia. Works with federal and state programs and volunteers. Council members represent planning district commissions, soil & water conservation districts and localities (counties and cities).

New River Valley Emergency Communications Regional Authority
Established to develop a consolidated system for the receipt of and response to 911 emergency calls and communications that will improve response time, quality of service and coordination of available resources for the citizens of the affected localities. Participating jurisdictions are Montgomery County, Towns of Blacksburg and Christiansburg and Virginia Tech.

New River Valley HOME Consortium
Comprised of local government representatives from Giles, Montgomery, Floyd and Pulaski counties and the Towns therein, and the City of Radford. The Consortium was established to attract federal HOME funds to the area.

Roanoke Valley Area MPO
The Urbanized Area Boundaries for the Roanoke Valley Area MPO (RVAMPO) extend into a small portion of eastern Montgomery County and allows Montgomery County to be a voting member of the RVAMPO. This organization approves the required activities/products of the MPO, such as the long-range transportation plan, the Unified Planning Work Program, Long-Range Transportation and the Transportation Improvement program.

Solid Waste Authority (Montgomery Regional)
Oversees garbage and refuse collection and disposal system, transporting garbage and refuse from transfer station and/or disposal sites, recycling systems and composting systems. The Authority includes Montgomery County, the Towns of Blacksburg and Christiansburg and Virginia Tech.

Virginia’s First Regional Industrial Facility Authority
Enhances the economic base for the member localities by developing, owning and/or operating one or more facilities on a cooperative basis involving its member localities. Members include the Counties of Bland, Craig, Giles, Montgomery, Pulaski, Roanoke, and Wythe; Cities of Roanoke and Salem; and the Towns of Christiansburg, Dublin, Narrows, Pearisburg and Pulaski.

Western Virginia Emergency Medical Services Council
Works to strengthen communications and quality of services provided by the medical community. It is funded by local, state and private dollars. Members include representatives of hospitals, rescue squads, and others.

Western Virginia Regional Jail Authority
Owns, operates and manages the Western Virginia Regional Jail. Includes Montgomery County, Franklin County, Roanoke County and the City of Salem.

Work Force Investment Act
Consolidates, coordinates and improves employment, training, literacy, and vocational rehabilitation programs in the United States. The Workforce Investment Act replaces the Job Training Partnership Act (JTPA) and the Private Industry Council (PIC). A Charter was signed to create the New River/Mount Rogers Workforce Investment Consortium by the Counties of Bland, Carroll, Floyd, Giles, Grayson, Montgomery, Pulaski, Smyth, Washington and Wythe, and the Cities of Bristol and Galax.
