Genealogy

Our office is responsible for housing and maintaining certain historical records beginning with Fincastle County, for the period of 1773-1777, and Montgomery County, for the period of 1777 and continuing. These records include land records/deeds, property tax records, limited revolutionary and civil war records, free negro records, civil and chancery court records (lawsuits and divorces), marriages and estates.

We also have limited birth and death records which date from 1853 to 1868 - the period before and after the Civil War. Other birth and death records must be requested from the Bureau of Vital Statistics in Richmond.
