Single stream recycling
Montgomery County, Blacksburg and Christiansburg residents may place household waste and recycling materials in the waste compactor or greenbox dumpsters at the consolidated sites.
Consolidated sites offer
single stream recycling, which means that you don't need to sort recyclables. Bottles, jugs, cans and jars may
be mixed with all paper (except corrugated cardboard) in one collection container. Clean pizza boxes will also be accepted. Please keep cardboard in a container separate from other recyclables.
Place all household
waste and recycling in the proper containers to reduce littering. Please pick up any trash you drop. Remember to close the recycling loop by purchasing recycled products packaged in recycled material.
Metal fuel tanks, sealed cylinders
or items that may be considered contaminated (vehicle fuel tanks, oil drums, etc.) will not be accepted.
Items that can be recycled
Mixed paper
Corrugated cardboard
Plastics #1 and #2 only, glass and metal
Items that cannot be recycled
Yard waste, commercial or construction/demolition waste, dead
animals, smoldering ashes or automotive parts. All yard or commercial waste must be taken to the Montgomery County Regional Solid Waste Authority. There is a reduced tipping fee for brush and untreated wood material,
so deliver these separately and save money! Brush and untreated wood are recycled and ground into mulch which is made available to the public.
Because some aluminum items--aluminum foil, aluminum cooking pans, cat food cans--are a different alloy than aluminum beverage cans, they cannot be recycled with the other single stream recyclables. These items should not be placed in the recycling containers at the County drop off sites. These items can be taken directly to the MRSWA separate from other single stream recyclables if desired.
Landfill hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Large household items
A container for large item refuse such as furniture is available for your convenience.
Please remove doors from refrigerators and freezers or tape doors shut. Remove non-metal parts. Remove all food from refrigerators prior to disposal at a consolidated site. Refrigerators with food left inside will not be recycled and will end up being thrown out.
