Several localities in Virginia to include Montgomery County, Floyd County, Giles County, Pulaski County, and the City of Radford, all participated in the “Renew the New” regional clean-up event on Saturday, Aug. 25, which was organized regionally by the New River Valley Regional Commission.
Locally, the Montgomery County Parks and Recreation department managed a clean-up crew at the Whitethorne Public Boat Launch. More than 100 volunteers collected 1,820 pounds of trash, miscellaneous debris to include a traffic cone, and tires from a 1.5 mile section of the New River. The event took place between 8 a.m. and noon and participants received a t-shirt and lunch.
In total, the collaborative, regional Renew the New clean-up effort resulted in 350 volunteers cleaning 13 miles of the New River and its surrounding banks and roadsides, with a grand total of 5.5 tons of refuse collected (325 trash bags and 130 tires).
