For the fourth consecutive year, Montgomery County has joined forces with several localities in Virginia to include Floyd County, Giles County, Pulaski County, and the City of Radford to help clean up the New River. The “Renew the New” regional clean-up event, which was organized regionally by the New River Valley Regional Commission, was held on Saturday, Aug. 31,
The Montgomery County Parks and Recreation department managed a clean-up crew at the Whitethorne Public Boat Launch. Nearly 140 volunteers collected 1,880 pounds of trash, miscellaneous debris to include a recliner, and tires from a 4-mile section of the New River. The event took place between 8 a.m. and noon and participants received a t-shirt and lunch.
In total, the collaborative, regional Renew the New clean-up effort resulted in 751 volunteers cleaning 25 miles of the New River and its surrounding banks and roadsides, with a grand total of 12,700 pounds of refuse collected to include 152 tires.
