Whitethorne Public Boat Launch

Whitethorne Public Boat Launch provides access to the New River in the McCoy area of Montgomery County, and is a prime location for fishing. There is a concrete ramp for easy launching of water craft. Limited trailer parking is available.
Beginning January 1, 2021 any person using a Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR)-owned or managed facility, including boat access sites, must have a valid Virginia hunting, trapping, or fishing permit, a Restore the Wild membership, an access permit, or current certification of boat registration issued by DWR to use the facility. American Whitewater provides information about water levels and boating for the McCoy area of the New River.

Designated as a State Scenic River, the New River is considered the second oldest river in the world after the Nile River. Additionally, the New River is one of only
a few rivers that flow northward. Many say it has the best smallmouth bass fishing in the state.

Follow McCoy Road to State Route 623 in Blacksburg, and take a left across the train tracks just after passing Kentland Farm.
