7/30/2015 - Purchase proposals sought for former school properties
The Board of Supervisors is seeking proposals for the sale of two former school properties in Blacksburg to help address school capital needs.
“The Board of Supervisors is seeking a fresh start to get these properties back on the tax rolls,” said Board Chair Bill Brown. “The Board has pledged to apply the proceeds from any sale of former school properties toward future school capital expenditures.”
The former Blacksburg Middle School property’s current zoning allows for development of four single family residential units per acre. Purchase proposals for the 20 acre property will be subject to the purchaser reaching an agreement with Fiddler’s Green Partners LLC, which has a contract for 14 acres at the rear of the property.
The former Blacksburg High School property also is zoned for low density residences. The 36 acre property at 520 Patrick Henry Drive will include the vacant, former school building, tennis courts, a softball field, baseball field and a paved track.
The former middle school on South Main Street closed in 2002-2003, and was conveyed to the County by the School Board in 2011. Fiddler’s Green agreed to buy 14 acres from the County for $3.1 million in 2011. This purchase, which was subject to rezoning by the Town of Blacksburg, has not been finalized.
The former high school was closed and vacated in winter 2010 after the gymnasium roof collapsed following heavy snowfall. The School Board deemed the property surplus and conveyed the property to the County in 2013. The new Blacksburg High School on Prices Fork Road opened in fall 2013.
The County seeks purchase offers for the properties that are not subject to or conditioned upon rezoning. In addition, the old middle school property sale must not be contingent on the Town of Blacksburg conveying its approximately 1.3 acres of adjoining property.
