After more than 20 cumulative years of service as a Montgomery County employee, Randy Wertz retires as Director of Elections and General Registrar, effective Feb. 28, 2017.
Wertz originally joined Montgomery County as the Deputy Assistant County Administrator in 1990 and held the position until 1999. In 2004, after working in healthcare for a few years, Randy accepted the position of General Registrar for Montgomery County.
"I studied history and political science in college. My education, combined with my knowledge of the County, prepared me for this exciting and ever-changing job," said Wertz.
The role of the Director of Elections and General Registrar includes registering voters, organizing and managing elections, supervising volunteers at the polls on Election Day, tallying election results, and establishing precinct boundaries for polling locations for the County's 25 precincts.
"There have been many long hours, but I've been blessed with a great team who are very hard-working," said Wertz.
Since 2004, the number of registered voters in Montgomery County has risen from approximately 43,000 to over 60,000 in 2016. "In my time as General Registrar, I've had to learn and help train people on three different types of voting machines and seen the evolution of paper poll books to electronic poll books," says Wertz.
"Randy has done a great job of staying informed of current election rules and regulations and managing volunteers throughout the elections each year. We appreciate his leadership and dedication as an employee with Montgomery County and wish him the best in his retirement," said County Administrator, Craig Meadows.
"I've been working since I was 16. So, I don't know what tomorrow is going to bring," Wertz said with a smile.
Connie Viar is succeeding Wertz as Director of Elections and General Registrar. Viar formerly served as the deputy assistant registrar and holds a graduate certificate as a Virginia Registered Election Official.
