Petco Foundation Invests In Lifesaving Work of the Montgomery County Animal Care and Adoption Center
Grant of $5,000 will extend efforts to save more animal lives in Montgomery County VA

The Montgomery County Animal Care and Adoption Center was awarded a $5,000 grant from the Petco Foundation to support its mission of education, adoption, and community.

The Animal Care and Adoption Center is a community-focused, no-kill facility with a primary goal of increasing animal adoptions and returning pets to their owners by expanding visitation and maximizing visibility and accessibility with a new facility on Cinnabar Road.

Since the grand opening of the new Animal Care and Adoption Center in April, 246 cats and dogs have entered the facility and 124 have left. Of that initial 146, there were 80 adoptions, (33 cats and 47 dogs); 30 animals placed in foster care (28 cats and two dogs); 50 animals reclaimed by their owners (two cats, 47 dogs, and one ferret); and 35 animals transferred to rescue organizations (21 cats, 12 dogs, and two mice).

In addition, through the generosity of IDEXX, Main St. Vet Clinic and MWI, all of the available animals at the new facility have been provided free heartworm tests and heartworm preventative.

"Nearly half of our operating budget is reliant on donations. This Petco grant is helpful in offsetting the costs associated with the needs of the animals in our care to include medical and preventative care supplies," said Eileen Mahan, Executive Director.

In addition to monetary donations, the facility has also created a wishlist of in-kind donation items. Just a few of the items on the wishlist include Purina dog and cat food; canned cat, kitten, and puppy food; soft dog treats; Kong dog toys; Nylabones; scratchers; cat toys; cat litter;  and even cleaning supplies to include: laundry detergent, disinfectant wipes, paper towels, dish soap, and scrub brushes.

Whether it is volunteering time to play with or walk the animals, providing an in-kind donation of an item from the wishlist, or giving a monetary donation, any help no matter the size is appreciated and significant to the Montgomery County Animal Care and Adoption Center.
