10/27/2017 - New River Valley Metropolitan Planning Organization Announces Transit Development Plan Kickoff

The New River Valley Metropolitan Planning Organization is kicking off a project to develop Transit Development Plans (TDPs) for each transit agency in the region – Blacksburg Transit (BT), Pulaski Area Transit (PAT), and Radford Transit (RT).

The project will study the current bus systems and possible improvements to make getting to work, shopping, entertainment and recreation in the New River Valley using public transportation more convenient.

Public feedback on both local and regional transit connections and services is being sought on this joint effort between BT, PAT, RT, and the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT).

"Citizens want transit that connects them to the whole New River Valley," said Dan Brugh, Executive Director of the NRV MPO, "Mobility options help make our region competitive, and working with the other transit agencies in the region helps ensure that we provide an integrated transit experience for our residents."

Each of the three TDP efforts will look at how transit can best serve residents, keeping in mind both current changing travel and development patterns. It will also include a review of current practices and unmet public transportation needs so that improvements can be identified for future projects.  Three separate but integrated final TDPs will include a practical, implementable plan for each transit agency.

The plan partners will be reaching out to the public by email, on social media (using the hashtags #ConnectBlacksburg, #ConnectPulaski, #ConnectRadford, and #ConnectNRV), at public workshops and on buses to ensure that the plan is shaped by the people who will use and benefit from it.

Workshops are anticipated to take place in each of the three towns during the week of November 6, 2017. In addition, there are several ways to get involved and provide feedback, including an online survey and public “pop-up” events in various locations between November 4 through 8.
