Marriage Licenses
Save time and fill out your marriage license application online 24/7.
The Montgomery County Circuit Court issues marriage licenses from 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m., Monday - Friday. Both spouses must be present for the application process. You must bring a valid, in-date, government-issued photo ID with you to apply. Some examples
are a drivers license, military I.D., or a passport. Contact the Clerk's office with any questions regarding this requirement.
Validity
A marriage license is valid for 60 days from the date it is issued. The marriage license is valid immediately upon issuance - there is no waiting period. If you do not have a ceremony performed within 60 days of obtaining
the license, the license is null and void, and you must reapply.
Once issued, the license is valid for a ceremony anywhere in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Virginia marriage licenses are not valid outside the state limits. Additionally,
your ceremony must be performed by a minister or officiant who is authorized to officiate marriages within the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Cost
The current cost of a marriage license is $30. You may apply for the license online, or when you come into the office. Regardless of application method, the
license must be picked up in person.
Civil Ceremony
If you wish to have a civil ceremony, you must make your own arrangements with a minister or marriage officiant. The Judges of the Circuit Court currently do not perform weddings. In their stead, there are
two civil officiants who serve the county, and they can be contacted via phone for ceremony appointments:
- Bill Brown: 540-951-3391
- Eddie Bowen: 540-250-6153
