Motor vehicle license fees
County motor vehicle license fees are due Dec. 5. The fee will be added onto the personal property bills of County residents (also due Dec. 5). All personal property taxes and motor vehicle license fees must be paid in full. If you have questions or concerns
about personal property taxes or motor vehicle license fees, contact the Commissioner of Revenue at 540-382-5710. Note: If the due date falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, the due date is moved to the next business day.
- Automobiles, trucks, buses, well drilling machinery - $23.50
- Motorcycles - $23.50
- Antique vehicles* - No charge
- Junked vehicles (without valid license tags) - $50
*Antique status is listed on the vehicle registration card
Disabled veterans
There is no motor vehicle license fee for any one motor vehicle owned and used personally by any veteran who holds a current state motor vehicle
registration card establishing that he or she has received a disabled veteran's exemption and has been issued a disabled veteran's motor vehicle license plate.
Farm use vehicles
The motor vehicle license fee is not
charged on vehicles used for seasonal transportation of farm produce and livestock providing the motor vehicle is registered to the owner or lessee of a farm and used on a seasonal basis in transporting farm produce and livestock along the public
highways for a distance of 30 to 50 miles.
Rescue squad/fire department volunteers
One free County motor vehicle license may be issued to members of volunteer rescue squads and volunteer fire departments. These motor
vehicle licenses will be verified by the Fire-EMS Department. If you are an active member and need a motor vehicle license fee adjustment, contact the Commission of Revenue's Office via email.
National Guard members
A
motor vehicle license fee for National Guard members can cost no more than that member pays for state license plates. National Guard members must present a Virginia state registration showing he/she is a National Guard member, and a statement of the
amount paid for the state license plate.
New residents
Montgomery County will honor the decal or motor vehicle license from another jurisdiction until its expiration.
New vehicles and trade-ins
A
motor vehicle license fee is assessed each calendar year based on Jan. 1 ownership/garage jurisdiction. The license fee is due on Dec. 5 of the preceding year and will be billed by the Treasurer at the same time as personal property taxes.
Town residents
Christiansburg and Blacksburg residents whose vehicles are garaged where they live do not pay a County motor vehicle license fee. Contact the Town of Christiansburg at 540-382-6128 or the Town of
Blacksburg at 540-961-1105 for motor vehicle license/decal information on vehicles garaged in those jurisdictions.
