Montgomery County is one of two localities in the Commonwealth of Virginia also celebrating its 250th anniversary in 2026.
From its roots in the American Revolution to the nation's first drone delivery, Montgomery County embodies the theme “Revolution to Revolutionary.”
Established in 1776, Montgomery County was itself a revolutionary idea, created as one of only three new Virginia counties formed that year. The county was named for Gen. Richard Montgomery, a hero of the American Revolution. Initial settlement in the area dates to the 1740s.
Since its founding, Montgomery County has developed a rich history shaped by agriculture, art, culture, manufacturing and technology. The county’s story includes connections to notable historical figures such as George Washington, Booker T. Washington, Andrew Jackson, Davy Crockett and Daniel Boone.

Throughout 2026, Montgomery County will share stories highlighting its “Revolution to Revolutionary” history and host events commemorating the milestone anniversary. Presales are underway for
commemorative license plates featuring the anniversary theme, and a commemorative trail map showcasing historic sites across the county has been created.
