Volunteer Montgomery History
The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program began in 1973 to serve the communities of Montgomery County and Radford. For the past 50 years the program provided adults, ages 55 and older, volunteer opportunities that utilized their skills and abilities. Volunteers provided services that benefited the environment, non-profit organizations, community organizations and many people of all ages. RSVP volunteers provided many services to our elderly citizens, shut-ins and nursing home residents.
Over the years, 797 RSVP volunteers provided 1,046,397 volunteer hours to the community in 590 placements. At minimum wage standards, our community has received a monumental return on their investment in RSVP, totaling $33,275,425.00. In 1994, RSVP won the prestigious JCPenney Golden Rule Award for outstanding volunteer service by an agency. Volunteers received the 1995 Governor's Award for Volunteerism Excellence, citing RSVP as "a model for other volunteer organizations in the Commonwealth."
In April 2023, RSVP transitioned to Volunteer Montgomery. This program is now fully funded by Montgomery County. There are no longer age restrictions so any resident of Montgomery County is eligible to volunteer.
Although the program name and age restrictions have changed, our valuable programs that we provide to the community remain the same. We will continue to focus our service delivery to our most vulnerable populations and our veterans, such as:
- Coupons for Military Bases
- Holiday Tote Bags
- Hugs and Buds
- Mailings for non-profit organizations
- Scholarship Fund
- Supplies for Seniors
